Ensuring safety with medical beds and equipment
On 30 August 2023, the MHRA issued a National Patient Safety Alert regarding medical beds, trolleys, bed rails, bed grab handles/bed lever, and lateral turning devices. There has been reported serious injuries and even deaths linked with equipment entrapment.
Actions required
- Bed lever inspection: If you use bed levers, we strongly advise checking that they are securely fitted. Refer to guidance document for detailed instructions
- Carers and health professionals: If you have concerns about the safety of any equipment including bed levers and bed rails, complete the online referral form for a re-assessment
